Should single mothers be forced to go to work rather than stay on benefits?
.Take the plunge There are a few essential items you’ll need to create a happy bathtime. Invest in a baby bath with a non-slip surface and a baby sponge to wash your tot’s body and hair. Use baby shampoo and soap-free body wash, as normal products can dry their sensitive skin. And make sure you have toys, from rubber ducks to brightly coloured bathtime books, to keep your baby amused!
.Bath-shy Six out of 10 babies are bathed every day. However, in the first few months there’s no need to do that as over-bathing can actually dry out her skin. For a newborn, use a washcloth or sponge to clean her instead of a full bath. She shouldn’t be fully submerged until her umbilical cord has dried up, due to the increased risk of infection. Once she’s old enough to bath every day, buy a moisturiser or barrier cream to protect her skin and help combat nappy rash.
Snug as a bug Some babies hate being naked and exposed to cold air. Avoid tears at bathtime by wrapping her in a mini fluffy towelling robe, so she’s nice and warm while you undress her. You can cover her bare tummy with a dry flannel when she’s in the bath.
Two’s company Having a bath with your baby can be an incredible bonding experience; you’ll both enjoy the intimacy of skin-to-skin contact. Have someone to hold your baby and keep her warm while you get in and out of the bath. Don’t be shy, hop in!
Safety first Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even to answer the phone or pop and get an extra towel. A baby can drown in just a few inches of water. If you do have to leave the room, wrap your baby in a big towel and take her with you.
