Last year almost 7,000 newborns were named Jack, while Thomas took the number two spot, ahead of Joshua for the first time since 2002.
Jack was originally a nickname for the name John, which has its origins in Hewbrew and it means God is gracious.
The name Jack also appears in various nursery rhymes and children stories, including Jack and Jill and Jack and the Beanstalk. Famous Jacks include Jack Nicholson, Jack Osbourne and author Jack Kerouac.
Last year’s second favourite, Thomas, can be spelt with or without the H and also comes from Hebrew meaning twin.
