Top baby boy names 2008

Jack remains a firm baby name favourite for another year

By Cari Thomas

Jack is a winner again in the 2008 list of top boy’s names for the 14th consecutive year. Thomas, which it beat to first place in 1994, has now fallen to sixth place.

In the list of 100 top names taken by Bounty parenting club Oliver interestingly comes in second - an almost identical name to the Olivia which heads this year’s girl’s list. Shakespeare famously named his Twelfth Night heroine Olivia, meaning Olive tree. It comes from the same Latin root as Oliver.

Meanwhile Charlie and Alfie creep into the top five pushing out Charlie and Joshua.

The prince's names move within the top 10 with Harry taking the leading despite his cotnroversial antics last year. Harry has risen from fifth to third place while William has fallen from eighth to tenth.

Again the infleunce of celebrities can be seen. Theo, thought to be inspired by the new English football hero, Theo Walcott, makes the biggest climb all the way from 70th to 58th place.  The number of Rileys, Ewans and Leons are also on the increase.

Zac enters the list after the hugely successful High School Musical starring teenage stud Zac Efron. It was also discovered the younger mums tend to be more influenced by celebrity names choosing boys names like Jayden, Tyler, Dylan, and Ryan.

Biblical trends continue but have shifted from the old favourites like Mark, John and Luke. Instead Joshua, Jacob, Isaac and Noah are becoming the contemporary choices.
