Top baby girl names 2008

Olivia over-takes Grace to become the UK's number one baby girl's name in 2008

By Cari Thomas

Olivia reclaims her throne as the top of the UK’s most popular girl’s names in 2008. It was top in 2006 but beaten by Grace in 2007.

Oliver meanwhile has crept to number two on the boys list meaning that an practically identical girl and boy name is close to reigning supreme.

Grace has fallen below Ruby which remains a firm second. It seems that the daughter of Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson has taken precedence over the Hollywood star Grace Kelly. In Wales, the home of Gavin and Charlotte, Ruby is top place.

Top favourites Emily, Jessica, Sophie, Chloe and Lily hold the same places in the top 10 for another year running. Mia however is a new entry at number nine pushing out last year’s favourite Ella.

The biggest moves among the 100 girl's names are Isla which has moved from 58th to 35th as new mum Isla Fischer’s (the star of Wedding Crashers) popularity increases. Seasonal names are going from strength to strength with Summer climbing a whopping 28 places from 44th to 16th.

Ava the name of Myleen’s Klass’s daughter has risen 15 places to 19th.  Meanwhile the popular name Amy has fallen to 23rd perhaps in relation to singer Amy Winehouse’s similar fall from grace.

However celebrity child names like Tom and Katie’s Suri or Angelina Jolie’s Shiloh have not tempted new mums failing to enter the list.
