Keeping your baby cool in the summer sun

Trying to stay cool in the months of summer can become even more of a challenge when you’re pregnant. Here are a few simple ways you can beat the heat without losing your cool…

Water, water everywhere…

Good news! Babies are well protected from even the hottest climates as long as you stay hydrated. However, you can dehydrate easily when you’re pregnant, so remember to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Try freezing water with a hint of lemon or orange juice as an icy snack – the perfect thirst quencher.

Fan-tastic

Pregnant women tend to suffer more in the heat, thanks to that extra weight you’re carrying. Keep hot flushes at bay with a compact water-misting fan available from most chemists. The fine spray of water will help cool you down, coming in very handy when you’re in those crowded areas, or just relaxing in the park.

What to wear?

When you’re choosing your clothes think light and loose. Dress in light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes in natural fibres that allow air to circulate, helping to prevent heat rash, a common problem for pregnant women.

A wide-brimmed hat makes the perfect summer accessory, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

Control your cravings

It’s not unusual to experience hot and spicy food cravings during pregnancy that cause discomfort. Instead, enjoy lighter meals like fish, salads and fruit.

Why not try creating your own smoothies using fresh fruit, muesli and yoghurt - Great as a snack and a hundred times healthier.

Having a Splash

When you’re pregnant your body temperature is already higher than normal due to the extra pressure on your body. So added heat from the sun is bound to make you feel uncomfortable.

Invest in a paddling pool (or inflatable birthing pool) if you don’t already have one. Fill it with cool water for your feet to dip in while you sit in the shade as the perfect way to relax and bring your temperature down.

Create a personal retreat

Relaxation is the key to comfort. Stock up on some good books, turn on the fan and listen to your music with a big pitcher of juice mixed with sparkling water as you indulge in some ‘me time’.

Try leaving a gel mask in the fridge or freezer and put it on whenever you need to cool down. You may look silly but who cares?

No are conditioning? Create your own!

If keeping your windows closed and curtains drawn in the day isn’t enough, to keep things cool try filling a bowl with ice and place it in front of your fan. Or, make an icy neck wrap.

Place ice cubes in a wet hand towel or washcloth and place it on the back of your neck. Gently rub the cloth up and down your neck and shoulders…aah, icy bliss!
