What’s he doing? At four months old he recognizes familiar people but doesn’t realise there’s only one of you – every time he sees you he thinks it’s another you. He likes to play now – he’ll reach for objects, particularly brightly coloured ones, and put everything in his mouth. He’s curious about his hands, which are now open most of the time.

How can he communicate? He’ll smile at you, even if you’re not pulling faces at him, in an attempt to get you to respond.

How you can help Give him different textured things to play with like wooden spoons and other safe kitchen utensils, and crackly greaseproof paper. Get involved yourself – you never knew a wooden spoon could be so much fun!
