Do you watch it? Do you think it is educational or a really bad habit for kids to get into? Are parents guilty of using it as a "babysitter?" I am actually reasonably impressed by the quality of some kids TV. I tend to watch it with the kids (saddo!) and it can spark some good discussions or open up some new ideas for them. My eldest (4) loves the numberjacks and it has given her a real enthusiam for numbers- she's started adding up, something I haven't taught her. On the other hand I hate adverts aimed at kids, so tend to stick to cbeebies/ playhouse disney where there are none. And I HATE the Night Garden (although I know kids love it!) What kids TV, if any, do you think is worthwhile?

yeah i think im guilty of using the tv as a baby sitter! i have in the night garden on sky+ whn i want to get ready in the morning i put it on cos hes glued to it and if he is having trouble calming down b4 bed i lay him on his bean bag while he watches it and goes to sleep! books excite him so its no good reading him the books! he has in the night garden books so i would say he is adicted to it lol!

Millie won't sit and watch anything except a 10 minute DVD about her or weather forecasts! I've tried a few programmes just to entertain her while I get some jobs done but to no avail. Mind you I'm not sure that's a bad thing!

Jaymee used to love cbebies but she prefers Playhouse Disney because it shows Pooh and Mickey. She likes the other shows like HigglyTown heros and little Einsteins. I don't mind them really but then they're not meant for me, the American stuff sometimes annoys me but she is learning all the songs which is really cute. I'm quite lucky that she'll sit quietly for a few hours so I can get stuff done but if she doesn't like a program she'll run off and play.

we dont use it a s ababy sitter as I prefer to watch it and talk to Celeste about what we are watching. She is really into number jacks too right now, she says -I want to learn about numbers now mummy!
She also like tommy zoom and we talk about the environment and wasting water/pollution/compost and any other topics that come up.
Our Planet -because of the animals - we call them by their English names and then she likes to tell me the French names and the countries they come from and what they eat etc!
Often the progs are just prompts for totally seperate conversations!
She is going thru a real dancey phase now so IF we watch tv she asks for 'funky music' so I have to find a tune she likes and we dance round the sitting room quite a bit which she loves.
She has also seen Countdown a couple of times and likes to say the numbers and letters when she recognises them. But I think its the clock tat she really likes!lol!

we havent got a tv lol
bebe - Jess (now 12!) used to love Countdown. I remember one day when she was in Reception class the teacher was talking about some letters were called vowels. Jess's hand shot up and said "and the other letters are called consonants!" - she'd learnt that from Countdown. I know many 11 yr olds who don't know that!
