Obesity

The state of being seriously overweight to a degree that affects an individual’s health.

Obstetric cholestasis

An uncommon condition of pregnancy characterised by very itchy skin caused by a build up of bile acids in the bloodstream. Symptoms usually manifest in the third trimester and disappear after delivery.

Oedema

Fluid retention in body tissues, especially in the fingers, wrists and ankles. An indicator for pre-eclampsia, especially when accompanied by protein in the urine or raised blood pressure.

Otitis media

A build up of fluid in the middle ear which can result in earache caused by a bacterial ear infection. Glue ear is a common childhood form of otitis media. See ‘glue ear’.

Overabundant milk

Over-production of breastmilk, which can cause leaking in public places. It usually occurs at the beginning stage of nursing and can result in a baby choking on the milk. Usually resolves as the body adapts to change.

Overdue

When a pregnancy continues for more than 42 weeks

Ovulation

The release of a ripe ovum from an ovary.

Ovum

Female reproductive cell or gamete.
