Top tips on how to bond with your baby

Bonding is essential for babies and most babies are ready to bond from the moment they're born. Therefore it's really important you get as much skin-to-skin contact with your baby as soon as possible.. Mother & Baby bonding
Baby massage is a great way to bond with your baby. There are lots of other ways to increase the bond you have with your baby, including eye contact and lots of hugs.

Top tips for baby massage

Make sure the room you massage your baby in is warm, comfortable and quiet.
If you close your eyes and press your eyelid - this should be the right amount of pressure you use on your baby. In small areas, use your finger tips rather than your whole hand. Use olive oil to massage your baby's skin as it is gentle on the skin.
Remember when massaging your baby's skin, it will need extra care because it is a lot more delicate than yours.
Use circular motions to massage oil to your baby's forehead and use gentle strokes to massage each leg and arm.
Wrap your baby up in a soft towel and cuddle them after the massage. It's a great way to continue the bonding with your baby now they are fully relaxed.

Looking after your baby's skin

Your baby's skin is very sensitive and so it's important you care for it properly.

Dr Sarah Jarvis explains: "Old skin is being rubbed off the surface of your body and new skin is being formed all the time. But your baby's skin is thinner and more vulnerable than yours so needs looking after."

Wash new clothes before you put them on your baby to avoid irritation.
