Stretchmarks- Health Notes

What are stretch marks?

Stretchmarks are red or brown shiny streaks that appear on your abdomen, breasts and thighs. They will gradually fade over time to become closer to your natural skin colour- however they will never disappear completely.

What causes stretchmarks?

They occur thanks to a loss of collagen and elastin fibres, which help the skin stretch, and rapid weight gain.

How can stretchmarks be treated?

Sadly, there’s little you can do to prevent stretchmarks, as they tend to run in the family. Stretch marks can be caused by rapid weight gain and although it’s not advisable to diet during pregnancy, you can control how much weight you put on by eating sensibly. You’re more likely to get them if you have dry skin, so keep yours supple by massaging moisturisers (creams containing collagen may help) into the area.

Alternative remedies

You can take the homeopathic remedy Calc fluor 6x during pregnancy to increase your skins elasticity.
