British children lack knowledge of their home country, a new study has found.

The report by thetrainline.com, found 85 per cent of children between the ages of four and twelve have visited abroad (an average up to seven foreign countries), yet their experience and familiarity of the British Isles is minimal.

Just one in ten of their parents believed their children could locate the British landmarks Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall and the Angel of the North.

Half of children from the UK have visited Europe, one in five has been on holiday to North America and one in ten has been to Asia. The study also shows that British children are twice as likely to have swum in the Mediterranean as the English Channel.

Ian Hildreth, marketing director of thetrainline.com said: "It’s amazing to think that British kids will have seen so many foreign places by the time they hit their teens. It is surprising however, to see the gaps in their knowledge about their own country."
