Celebrities join charities to march for mothers

Join celebs and charities to urge politicians to make mothers and children a priority world-wide...

Celebrities, VIPS and major charities have joined forces to urge world leaders to make women’s health a priority.

The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood (WRA), of which Naomi Campbell is Global Ambassador and Sarah Brown is Global Patron, is a global movement to prevent the needless deaths of women in childbirth.

One woman in the world dies every minute and two million newborn babies die every year – mostly because of preventable causes related to pregnancy.

For International Women’s Day on the 8th of this month, the WRA has organised a march on Millennium Bridge in London at midday. There, charities and UK supporters including celebrities and VIPs will call for greater protection of mothers and children’s health, pushing politicians to place maternal and child health at the forefront of their policy priorities

To coincide with Mother’s Day on the 14th, there will be another march at Parliament on the 12th March. The WRA asks supporters to send Mother’s Day cards addressed to the political party leaders urging them to make women’s health and safety a priority.

Director and artist Sam Taylor-Wood and interior designer Kelly Hoppen have each designed a Mother’s Day card for the public. The cards will be presented to Number 10 Downing Street and the other two party leaders during the week, to ask that mothers and babies are on the agenda, whoever wins the next election.
