Natural honey is a more effective remedy for children’s coughs than over-the-counter medicines, researchers say.

According to a new study, a dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime can easily outperform a cough suppressant.

The study showed that honey did a better job of reducing the severity and frequency of night-time coughs and it also improved sleep quality for children and their parents.

Pertinently, Dextromethorphan (DM), the ingredient in many cough mixtures had no significant impact on symptoms, whereas, honey has been used in medicine for centuries.

Traditionally honey has not only been used to treat coughs and bronchitis but also to assist the healing of wounds. And, many adults often mix the sweet sticky substance together with boiling water, lemon, ginger or brandy.
