How long after you give birth does it for the placenta to come out and does it hurt?

you can choose, have an injection of sintocinon and the placenta is normally out in minutes, or continue labouring and it will be pushed out in under an hour. just make sure you ask them to check it is all there because retained placenta parts can cause bleeding and infection, i asked to check mine and with the rush of love for my new baby totally forgot, my dh bless him made himself look ( its shaped a bit like a plate and looks like a steak) and spotted gaps, the midwife checked again and the last bits were removed. could have been nasty.

They give you an injection and it's out in minutes - actually, because I'd had an epidural, mine came out without me even noticing. I had my lovely new son on my chest, looked down and the doctor was putting a few stitches in. I couldn't feel them (because of the epidural) and I had delivered the placenta without knowing it!! I was far too interested in little Samuel to care and I was so worried about delivering the placenta beforehand! I even looked at it afterwards and I didn't think I would want to. Obviously everyone is different and I don't know how it feels without an epidural, but I do believe it is usually quite a quick affair!

hiya! panic not! when i had my little girl i was so overcome with emotion that i barely noticed. It was only a couple of minutes after I gave birth and with 1 final push it was out, it was nothing compared to the real thing! you will be so amazed at finally seeing your baby you really wont care. good luck! x
